Nokia announces 3 new CDMA handsets – 6316s, 3806, 1506

Nokia has announced the release of three new CDMA mobile phones, Nokia 6316s, Nokia 3806 and Nokia 1506. With this launch, Nokia sets to expand its CDMA range of handset in China and the Far East.

David Tang, Vice President of Nokia China said, “Nokia is boosting its leadership in the CDMA market by updating an already strong line-up with products that appeal to a wide range of customer needs”.

Nokia 6316s – A 3G way to stay entertained

First in the list is Nokia’s new 3G multimedia handset 6316s. This has an elegant design and powerful functionality together in a compact slide with a stainless-steel body. With the following features, the mobile makes easier than ever for people to stay in touch and share the things. The features include

The phone comes with an interesting Health Assistant application which should help you stay healthy as it is supposed to make it easier for you to deal with various issues of your daily life. Users are allowed to efficiently manage thir stress and lead a healthier life.

This mobile is available in piano black, pure white and rose gold and is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2010.

Nokia 1506 – The Cheapest CDMA

Finally in this list comes the Nokia 1506. This is supposed to be the most affordable CDMA model to date. Though it does’nt have much features, the available features include voice recorder, a slender monoblock design with high-gloss colors, a Navigation key in metallic finish, integrated handsfree speaker and long battery life.

This device is available in black and plum and is expected to reach the market before the end of 2009. Nokia has not announced the prices of these three new handsets so far.

Samsung badaOS

Samsung have announced the badaOS for their mobile phones. It will be a replacement to the Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms. The name “bada” is derived from a Korean word signifying “ocean”. The name was chosen as it represents the endless possibilities with the OS.

Samsung bada is a new open platform that enables a richer user experience in applications on Samsung mobile devices.

Right now no further information on the platform is available. Sasmung only gives us a sneak peek and slight info at an official site.

The official announcement should be in December when Samsung will officially launch the OS along with the SDK.

New logo for Firefox (MINI)

As we all know firefox is extending its services to the mobile, they were in search of new logo for their Firfox Mini which is used in the mobiles.

They had several logos designed for this contest from several designers and they have short listed the logo which is used for the firefox mobile couple of days ago. The winner of this contest was "PocketFox".

Droid Does... only have 256MB of storage for apps

Motorola's Droid is a sweet piece of hardware that's hyped to give the iPhone a run for its money, especially since it's running the new Android 2.0 OS, and works on the Verizon network in the US. We care about software here at Download Squad though, and there's some dismaying news about the Droid on that front: it has only 256MB for app storage. Seriously.

The Droid reportedly only packs a 512MB ROM (that's the built-in memory), of which only half is allocated for apps. There are some iPhone games that couldn't even fit in that teeny-weeny storage space! But at least it's expandable, right? Um, nope. Google doesn't support installing apps to the SD cards that Motorola relies on, so developers are pretty limited in terms of file sizes for their Android 2.0 software.

The Droid may have a solid CPU and GPU for gaming, but games that take full advantage of that hardware are likely to need 100 megabytes or more of storage space. That's going to make things pretty tough until Android 2.0 comes to a device with a lot more pre-installed flash memory.

Nokia Charger Replacement is just for Nokia 7210 in India

Nokia had initiated a global charger replacement program for 3 of it’s faulty chargers but looks like the problem affects a small group of Nokia users in India.Only Nokia 7210 which comes with the AC-3E charger and purchased after June 15th 2009 and before August 9th 2009 may be affected.This does not impact the usage or safety of the Nokia phone in any manner. Only the chargers which have been manufactured by a third-party manufacturer have been recommended to be replaced for free as a quality issue has been found

During a routine quality control process, Nokia identified a potential product quality issue with certain chargers manufactured by one of its third-party suppliers. The plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electric shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket.

Nokia is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these chargers. No consumer complaint has been received in India or globally regarding this issue and the charger exchange program is a responsible initiative to proactively inform consumers to exchange their chargers and safeguard them.

Only a limited number of charger model AC-3E manufactured by a third-party supplier between June 15 and August 9, 2009 are within the scope of the global exchange program.

For consumers to check to see if their chargers are part of this free exchange program, Nokia India has set up simple solutions that are accessible across the country.

A. IDENTIFYING CHARGERS TO BE EXCHANGED (only if you have bought a Nokia 7210 after June 15, 2009): Consumers can identify whether their chargers are a part of the Charger exchange program in three ways:

These are:

1. A simple 3-step SMS solution:

Step-1: Every charger has a 27 digit code printed on it. Consumers are requested to Please Key in (CHG) SPACE (the 27 digit in the serial number of the charger). Eg. CHG 4956279274091613752;0675370

Step-2: Please send this to 55555

Step-3: Consumers will then get a reply from Nokia ‘via sms’ that will inform them whether their charger is included in this exchange program

This easy three step process will take a few minutes.

2. Starting November 10, 2009, consumers can also walk into any Nokia Care Center or any Nokia Priority Dealership store (NPDs) across the country and check if their chargers are a part of this exchange program.

3. Consumers can also log into to http://chargerexchange.nokia.com and fill in their charger details and verify if the charger is part of the exchange program.

B. EXCHANGING IDENTIFIED CHARGERS:

For exchanging their chargers, consumers have the following two options:

1. Visit the nearest Nokia Care Centre: Replacement chargers are available at the 700+ exclusive Nokia Care Centers only across the country starting November 10, 2009.

For more information on Nokia Care Centers, consumers can call 30303838 with the Local STD code of the city that he/ she is dialing from.

2. Consumers can also fill in their address and contact details online on http://chargerexchange.nokia.com. Replacement chargers would then be couriered to the consumers.

Nokia recommends consumers with chargers within the scope of this exchange program to stop using the charger and exchange it for a free replacement at the earliest.

manufactured between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009.

For more information, including how consumers can check to see if their chargers are part of this exchange program, Nokia has established a website. Consumers are asked to visit http://chargerexchange.nokia.com or their local Nokia website.

Nokia recommends consumers with chargers within the scope of this exchange program to stop using the charger and exchange it for a free replacement.

Improved google maps to Andriod phones

Nokia 5800 firmware version v31.0.101 Out

Nokia has just released a new firmware 31.0.101 for Nokia 5800. However there are no major changes in the the phone after the firmware upgrade and the much touted kinetic scrolling is still missing in the phone.

Important features of this new firmware are:

• An Advanced e-mail application


• An improved navigation experience


• An enhanced version of Ovi Maps 3.0


• Lots of Bugfixes.

This update is currently available to only certain Asian & European Product codes and will be available to everyone very soon.

Though 5800 has UDP (i.e. User Data Preservation) and none of your data will be affected with the firmware upgrade, it is always better to take a backup of all your data.

Just Key in *#0000# into your phone´s home screen. Select Options; Check for updates, and follow the on-screen guide. Alternatively, you can also upgrade your phone’s firmware via Nokia Software Updater.

3D Multi-touch coming soon to Nokia phones

You might have seen non-touchscreen phones , normal touchscreen phones and phones with support multi touch like the iPhone or HTC Hero. Nokia seems to be working 3D Multi-Touch according to a recent patent filing

The screen will not only detect your finger position but also how much pressure you are putting on the screen. Imagine pressing the screen really hard to delete a message and a soft press for a scroll.

For now its just work in progress and actual implementation might take a lot of time.

Is it time to say good bye to VOIP??

Just as the Department of Telecom, or DoT, has taken a call to bury IMEI-less handsets that could play into the hands of terrorists, reports suggest that your untraceable Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP services may not live very long too.

Reportedly, India's Intelligence Bureau (IB) has instructed the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to block all Internet telephony services in and out of India till DoT can devise a method to track such calls.

According to the report, "In the absence of Caller Line Identification (CLI) parameters of calls landing from abroad, it's next to impossible to identify the country of location of the caller. The calls passing through the VoIP/IP route contain inadequate parameters rendering it impossible to trace the actual callers. As DoT had conveyed that it is not possible to mandate transmission of CLI from abroad, IB has approached DoT to block such calls till a technical solution is found."

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended the lifting of restrictions on Internet telephony in the country in August 2008.

As per TRAI, there are around 34 companies providing VoIP services in the country. If the block is implemented, it is likely to disrupt the habits and businesses of many.

Opera mini 5 beta enables tabbed browsing

Java-enabled phones: Opera Mini, the savior of phones with less-than-awesome pre-installed browsers, is available in in a beta version of its fifth release, with an overhauled look, tabbed browsing, Speed Dial startup links, password management, and more helpful tweaks.

The core features of Opera remain from the current 4.2 version, including the ability to turn on Turbo pre-cached content on slow connections and general speed improvements. New to this version are browser-top tabs, a password manager that asks if you want to save credentials after you successfully log in, and a new look and feel for the address and button toolbars. Facebook Introduces Google SMS Like Service in India

Around this time last year, Google introduced SMS Channels in India that allowed mobile phone users to subscribe to information channels like news, weather, stocks, etc. through text messages.

Even bloggers could create SMS channels for their own blog and send updates about new articles to their subscribers through SMS messages. The service is still around and continues to remain free for both publishers and mobile phone users though Google adds advertising in text messages.

Facebook recently introduced something similar in India so you can receive text updates on your mobile phone from the Facebook pages of your favorite brands, celebrities, restaurants or even websites.

As a mobile phone user, you can can join any Facebook page by simply texting fan page_name to 9232232665 (92FACEBOOK) from your mobile phone*.

If you want to receive updates about a page on your cell, you can open that page on the Facebook site and choose “Subscribe via SMS”. To turn off updates, choose the unsubscribe option on the page itself or SMS “stop” to the same Facebook number – 9232232665.

Unlike Google SMS Channels which can be be used for both push updates and group communication, the SMS feature in Facebook is primarily push (for receiving updates from a page).

As a blogger, you can use this feature to notify readers about your most recently published articles while businesses can use Facebook SMS to communicate deals and offers with their customers (like Pizza Hut sending out discount coupons to all their fans in India via SMS).

*Before you start receiving updates from Facebook page, you need to activate Facebook Mobile. For that, just send a text message containing only the letter “f” (without quotes) to 9232232665 and you are done. I am not sure if your mobile carrier will charge your for any incoming text messages from Facebook but you’ll of course have to pay for sending one.
